Jakobstad, Finland

Hello!

My name is Sara.
I have a degree in furniture design, is an entrepreneur in interior and graphic design, a part time student and also working as a fulltime teacher at Optima in Jakobstad, Finland.
Artesan - interiörsassistent is the department where I work everyday and my main subjects circle around culture, creativity, interior and product design.

This blog project is a part of my studies to become a certified teacher and a part of our internship. I will do my internship at Yrkeshögskolan Novia, also in Jakobstad. I will teach a course in lighting design for a group of students studying to become Interior designers (Spatial Design, Bachelor's Degree in Design).

  2. Hello Sara! I guess your students are adults? Have they completed VET education (yrkesutbildning) at upper secondary education before the go to Yrkeshögskola Novia? How old are they when the start and is it a popular education?

    1. Hello Ingrid! At Novia my students are 20+ age. Some of them have a VET education and some a upper secondary school degree (gymnasium?). And some even have a higher education such as university. At my dayjob at Optima (VET education) my students are 16 to about 20 years so old and they often come straight from primary school (grundskola).

Both educations are very popular and Jakobstad have a huge range of culture when it comes to design, music and arts.

  3. Hello Sara
You are teaching a range of subjects. What is your favourite one to teach?

What are the main teaching approaches that you use to support the learning of your students?

    Regards
    Susanne

    1. Hi Susanne!

I can't exactly say which subject is my favorite, it depends on the interest in the group and which project we are working on. But culture, design history and productplanning is close to my heart.

I rarely use lectureing in my classes. We use a lot of researching, movie clips, pictures, illustrations, discussions and also work a lot with portfolios.

    1. The students are often in groups of 12-18. Every year when admitting we can take on 18 new beginners. How many students do you have in your classes?
